Oscar and Lucinda [novel] (1988)

Oscar and Lucinda had the working titles 'Orphans', 'Broken Glass', and 'Holy Ghost'. Published in 1988 in Australia by University of Queensland Press. In the same year it won the Book Council Award (Australia), Booker Prize for Fiction (Australia) and Miles Franklin Award. Includes: Complete and incomplete drafts of Oscar and Lucinda and its working titles, including corrections, notes, correspondence, research material, publicity material, reviews, speech notes for the launch of Oscar and Lucinda. Oscar and Lucinda has won the Booker Prize 1988, Miles Franklin Award 1989, NBC Banjo Award 1989, Townsville Foundation for Australian Literary Studies Award 1988, and the Festival Award for Literature (South Australia) 1990.

From the story outline, 'The Trial : A new comedy by Franz Kafka' written by Peter Carey, was to "concentrate on the hitherto undiscovered comic nature" of this work by KafKa. Consists of story outlines and typescript drafts with emendations.

The first may be from 1982, with leather ties to close; the second may be from the 1991 or 1992, all pages have been crossed through, the front cover and spine have come away; the third may be from about 1993, all contact pages have been crossed through, the verso and fly leaf have not been crossed through, the front cover and spine have come away; and the final address book is spiral bound with cartoons throughout, on the cover it says 'To 2004' and no pages have been crossed through.

Eustace [Short story] (1982)

Eustace, a short story, was first published in 1982 with the novella Child's Play and short story The Prowler. Further editions were published in 1983 and 1999, and Eustace was included in Malouf’s The Complete Stories published in 2007. There are two typescript drafts in this subseries. The first is an early typescript draft, 10 leaves, extensive handwritten emendations, word count on last page, and undated. The second is a typescript draft, 21 leaves, including the title page, handwritten emendations, word count on last page, and undated.
