Correspondence

This series contains a large amount of incoming correspondence. The correspondence covers the broad range of Oodgeroo Noonuccal's activities and interests. It covers her activities as a writer and guest speaker. There is correspondence from Aboriginal organisations, government departments, school students, teachers, universities and letters of appreciation for her work. The bulk of the correspondence is in the 1970s and 1980s. Correspondence is also scattered in various files throughout the collection. The correspondence is mostly incoming letters with only a small number of outgoing letters.

Original folder was titled 'Short stories'. There is one screen play and 28 short stories. Some are edited or annotated; some have multiple drafts; some are written by Kathryn Ruska. Contains the following short stories:

Contracts with Thomas Nelson and Drafts of 'The Drunken Rhyme' [novel]

The original folder was titled 'Contracts, Novels'. It contains two copies of a contract between Kath Walker and Thomas Nelson for a literary work to be entitled 'New poems', undated. In the folder are two typescript drafts of the novel 'The Drunken Rhyme' (one copy with 10 chapters and one with 11).

The original folder had the title 'Unpublished poems and stories, copies only, for America'. It contains a list of stories and poems (2 copies) with handwritten details for Kath Walker. The poems: ‘Blue Crane’, ‘Mangrove Bird’, ‘Minjerriba’, ‘Butcher Bird’, ‘Moongalba Peacocks’, ‘Credit and Loss’, ‘The Golden Voice’, ‘Oration’, ‘On Trugganner’, ‘Papua New Guinea’, ‘Bluff Mountain’, ‘Little Bean’, ‘Hari Sastra’, ‘Iban Longhouse’, ‘Yussef (Hi-jacker)’, ‘Commonplace’, ‘Exile’, ‘Grey Gum’, and ‘Sister Poet’. An extra poem, not on the list is included: 'Son of a son of mine'. Spiral note and exercise book containing handwritten short stories titled: 'Beginning of life', 'Follow follow', 'Mirrabooka', 'Curlew', 'The midden', 'Bora', 'Ole Mick', 2 untitled short stories, 'In the new time', 'Tuggan Tuggan (Silky Oak)', 'The tank', 'The fisherman', 'Pomera (Banksia)', 'Tiagam (Lawyer Vine)', 'Talwalpin (Cotton Tree) & Kowinda (Red Mangrove)', 'The carpet Snake', 'Cookie', 'The dugong hunt', and 'Myora'. On the last page (to 11 November 1969) is a list of titles that have been submitted (or not) and whether they have been accepted or rejected. The inside of the front and back cover have English words and their Indigenous language equivalent.
