Typescript drafts 1-8 of the novel, and complete copies of final manuscript with print out dates and chapter/draft numbers in the footer. There are several copies of the 7th draft some with annotations by Robert McCrum and Carey. Annotations date the 7th draft as being October and November 1996. 8th draft has annotation by Carey: "with Alison's suggestions". There is also folders of rejected material mainly from 3rd and 6th drafts labelled: "Off-cuts".

'Inside the mouse' was the first working title for The unusual life of Tristan Smith. These drafts are from 1991 and 1992.

Drafts, complete and incomplete, of the autobiographical story that was published in book Four easy pieces (Belmont Press, London, 2002). Not all drafts have numbers and/or dates. Draft numbers are 4 to 7. Working title was 'On going home' and was on the original folder (discarded). Some drafts have printout dates in footer, 19 Apr to 21 Apr 1994.

Correspondence relating to and partial drafts of 'Till the end of the world' (Until the end of the world) This material was in an envelope (now discarded) which had written on the front: 'Until the end of the world - correspondence + fading faxes', 1988 to 1989.

Incomplete drafts sent to Peter Carey by Anthony (Tony) Hassall, corresondence and faxes between the two, and copies Carey's chronology for the book.

Draft of Blood, Tin, Straw by Sharon Olds, dated 20 Jan 1997, with a letter from Olds to Carey thanking him for looking at the draft.

Typescript draft and two incomplete carbon typescript drafts (one with a few corrections) of the short story I know you can talk. The date September 1971 appears on one of the carbon typescript drafts.

Five drafts with four titles, which begins 'My mother and father are dead'. Footer from the final draft has the date 7/5/92 and the title 'Dear Mum & Dad', 10 leaves. Other titles are: 'Child's play', no footer on printout, 9 leaves, undated; 'An expatriate', no footer on printout, 10 leaves, undated; 'An expatriate', no footer on printout, with handwritten emendations, 10 leaves, undated; 'The successful five year old', footer in printout has the title 'Melb. Hyatt Speech', 10 leaves, undated.
