Agriculture and Entomology Building, University of Queensland

The Co-Ordinator General of State Works originally gave the commission for the University of Queensland Agriculture and Entomology Building (known as Hartley Teakle Building) to Fred Scorer of the firm Scorer and Scorer on 17 March 1966. After Fred Scorer's untimely death in 1966, James Birrell purchased the Scorer and Scorer firm as part of setting up his own practice. He resigned as University Architect in late March 1966. The Co-Ordinator General approved Birrell taking over the commission for the Agriculture and Entomology Building. James Birrell and Partners were the architects for the building. The site chosen for the building was to the north-west of the Great Court on the western side of Mill road. The glass houses and veterinary buildings were built. Mayne Hall, now the UQ Art Museum and the Biological Science Library and Refect were not yet built. Front Drive still ran along the front of Main Building (now Forgan Smith).

The Agriculture and Entomology Building was designed to follow the site contours, was a 'c-shaped plan' and was designed to be built in three separate stages. Each stage was designed to be complete within themselves. Stage 1 was completed in February 1969; Stage 2 in May 1970; and Stage 3 in December 1970.

The subseries consists of plans for the Agriculture and Entomology Building, Stages 1-3, on the University of Queensland St. Lucia campus. It contains preliminary drawings by James Birrell as the University Architect and Master plans by Scorer and Scorer. Stage 1 : Job B7. Stage 2 : Job B7A; Stage 3 : Job B7B. Includes: site plan, floor plans, drainage plans, elevations, sections, roof details, site works, sun control details, window details, stair details, furniture details, seminar rooms, teaching rooms, administrative rooms, staff room details, student rooms, door schedules, perspectives, preliminary plans. Preliminary drawings by J. P. Birrell (University Architect) and Scorer and Scorer

This file has the initial drawings James Birrell designed while University Architect and those by Scorer and Scorer when given the initial commission in 1966. Birrell designed several pilot plans that were very different to the final built proposal. The sketch plans Birrell presented to the Buildings and Ground committee were approved for submission to Australian Universities Commission (A.U.C.), who approved the plans on 24 January 1967.

In this file there are preliminary plans for the proposed Agriculture and Entomology Building, designed by Birrell while University Architect. Drawings:
[Item 1] 1 set of 7 colour architectural drawings with 'Preliminary' written in red ink on bottom right hand corner of each plan, ink line drawings (with colour) on paper, consisting of 2 pages of elevations and 1 plan for each floor (lower ground floor, ground floor and floors 1 to 3), originally stapled together as one volume, possibly a presentation volume, 70 x 99cm (Previously treated as 7 separtate items numbered A16.01-07).
[Items 2-3] Copies of the two elevations preliminary drawings, ink line drawings on tracing paper, no title block, sticky taped together across middle (previously numbered A16.08-09).
[Items 4-7] Copies of the floor plans from the Prelimary set of drawings (lower ground floor is missing), ink line drawings on tracing paper, title block for the University of Queensland and University Architect J. P. Birrell (previously numbered as A16.10-13).

Scorer and Scorer were initially given the commission by the Co-ordinator General of Public Works for the Agriculture and Entomology Building. With the death of Fred Scorer in 1966, James Birrell purchased his firm and with it came the commission for the Agriculture and Entomology Building. These five drawings by Scorer and Score are: [Items 8-12] ink line drawings on tracing paper, with pencil annotations, and include a Master Plan, Site usage, and Massing 1-3.

Job A43 Geology Annex, University of Queensland [Unbuilt]

The Geology Annex was submitted with the proposals for the Chemistry Annex and the Western Arts Building to the Australian Universities Commission (A.U.C.) in 1965, and rejected. It was to be situated behind the exiting Geology building, along Circular Drive (now named Staff House Road) between the Physics Annex and the bookshop. It was designed with basement, ground and first to fifth floors. It was resubmitted to the A.U.C. in 1966 and rejected again. This file comprises 16 plans for the proposed geology annex, including pilot plans, elevation, perspective views, floor plans for each level, as well a master planning conception drawing, massing considerations drawing and sketches of Geology annex view from Lake, the North East and from within the court (or intimate space as referred to on one of the concept drawings). One pilot plan dated March 1965.

Proposed Western Arts Building, University of Queensland [Unbuilt]

The Western Arts Building was designed to be geometrically related to the existing surrounding buildings forming a visual relation across Mill Road. It was to sit back from the western end of Main Building (Forgan Smith), linked by a cloister. The pilot plan for the proposed Western Arts Building designed by Birrell was submitted to the Australian Universities Commission (A.U.C.) in 1965 and rejected. Birrell's design was a break from the original design by Hennessy and Hennessy who were eventually commissioned as architects for the Western Arts building (Mitchie Building) on 16 March 1967.

This file consists of 35 plans for proposed New Western Arts building on the St. Lucia campus. Includes: site plans and presentation sketches for floor plans and perspectives.
