Correspondence: Authors

This subseries is comprised of correspondence between Kath Walker and other authors. In some cases, letters from literary authors have been kept with other material for contextual reasons. Some letters will contain literary work. Correspondence

This series contains a large amount of incoming correspondence. The correspondence covers the broad range of Oodgeroo Noonuccal's activities and interests. It covers her activities as a writer and guest speaker. There is correspondence from Aboriginal organisations, government departments, school students, teachers, universities and letters of appreciation for her work. The bulk of the correspondence is in the 1970s and 1980s. Correspondence is also scattered in various files throughout the collection. The correspondence is mostly incoming letters with only a small number of outgoing letters.

Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters

Correspondence, reports, ephemera, and articles have been collected around the areas of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters: culture and cultural events; education; politics; rights; welfare; and SEMP (Social Education Materials Project).

Ephemeral material, partial articles and reports, photocopied material, and newspaper cuttings held in the Culture and cultural folder include:

  • Photocopied typescript of the lecture given by HC Coombs, Aboriginal Australians 1967-1976 : a decade of progress?, at the third Walter Murdoch Lecture delivered at Murdoch University on 19 October 1976, 27 leaves; with a with compliments slip from HC Coombs attached.

Included in this series: autobiographical and biographical material, which includes the film Shadow sister; an address book; a diary; personal financial information; material by or relating to her sons, Denis and Vivian; notebook with rhyming words; notebooks with Aboriginal words; and unidentified material, most with Kath's' handwriting.

Manuscripts

This series consists of both published and unpublished works by Oodgeroo Noonuccal and contains poetry, short stories, play scripts, speeches and reports.
