Carey's labeling on the folders indicates that writing began on 3 Feb 1988. The 11th draft is dated 20 Nov 1990. Drafts have extensive handwritten emendations. Some of the 9th and 10th draft material includes extensive handwritten notes probably by Alison Summers.

Copy edited manuscript returned to Peter Carey with a letter by Emma Platt of Faber and Faber, 24 May 1995; and a fax from Carey to Charles Boyle of Faber and Faber, with a list of changes, 16 Mar 1994.
