Research material and notes for a Ph.D. thesis, An analysis of Brisbane society in the 1890's by Ronald Lynton Lawson. The thesis was submitted to the History Department of the University of Queensland in 1970. The thesis analyses the society of Brisbane in 1891 and 1901. In 1967 Lawson used a structured interview technique, with a 112 questions on many aspects of life, surveying people who were children or adolescents in the city of Brisbane in 1891 and 1901. Over a period of three months Lawson interview 75 people aged 79 years and over. Questions included: when did parents arrive in Australia; the sort of dwellings they lived in; if they had servants; family roles; employment; newspapers read; diet; where was the grocery shopping done; vehicles; education; religion. This file includes the questionnaires, notes and photographs.

Brisbane perspectives: research summaries of aspects of Brisbane's history 1859-1887
John R. Laverty was a Research Assistant for Professor Gordon Greenwood. In the early 1950s, Laverty produced these research summaries to facilitate Greenwoods work in writing the history of the first twenty years of the Brisbane Municipal Council and some aspects of Brisbane's early history. The two bound volumes were complied by Matthew Fuchs in 2004, and comprise photocopies of carbon copy typescript. Volume 1 contains: a survey of Council activities, evidences of city development, the growth of Brisbane city, animal nuisance issues, the Brisbane Bridge and water supply. Volume 2 contains more detailed information about the city such as cemeteries, ferries, Port of Brisbane, parks and recreation reserves, the Town Hall, roads, sewerage, street improvements and city transport.
