The majority of this collection comprises drawings, posters and essays produced by Douglas McKay for assessment purposes during his architecture degree at The University of Queensland from 1963 to 1968. The collection also includes an entry by McKay and Donald Watson in a 1967 residential design competition, drawings completed by McKay for commercial architectural firms while still a student, and posters for university student revues.

While some of McKay's student drawings are conventional architectural plans, others are mixed media works which feature photographs and/or newspaper cuttings. The series also contains drawings created by McKay for commercial firms while he was a student, and drawings created for a competition.
