Born in Walloon in 1875, the elder son of William Haenke, then a blacksmith, Martin William Haenke was articled to the Ipswich architect Henry E. Wyman in 1891. He later moved to Melbourne, where he was employed by architects Lloyd Tayler and Fitts before returning to practise in Queensland, in 1900. An early proponent of the Californian bungalow style in Queensland, Haenke was also successful as a building surveyor and colliery proprietor. He died in Ipswich on 13th January 1952.
