The Aborigines Advancement League was formed in Victoria in 1957 as the Victorian Aborigines Advancement League. It drew from two already existing organisations, The Australian Aborigines Advancement League (established in 1932 by William Cooper) and the Save the Aborigines Committee (formed in 1955). Gordon Bryant was president, Doris Black was deputy president, Stan Davey was secretary and Douglas Nicholls was the field officer. The AAL is the oldest Aboriginal Organisation in Victoria and has had a long history as a focal point for Aboriginal welfare.
