Administrative history
Women's Campaign for Abortion (WCA) formed in 1979 by a coalition of women's groups including Children by Choice Association, Pregnancy Control, Australian Labor Party (ALP) Women, Women's Abortion Action Campaign (WAAC) and other individuals and groups. WCA formed a liaison committee with Working Women's Charter Committee to obtain trade union support. WCA's objective was to oppose proposed Queensland legislation to further restrict availability of abortions. WCA demands including the repeal of all abortion laws; free, safe abortion, contraception and sterilisation on demand; no formed sterilisation; and an end to 'conscience' vote provisions in party policies. The campaign was active in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich and Townsville. The campaign's activities subsided around 1986. A later iteration of WCA, the Women's Abortion Campaign (WAC), was formally re-established in 1991 after individuals interested in abortion matters in Queensland began meeting again in 1989.
