University of Queensland Union (1911- ).
Objectives - To facilitate communication between students and University administration and to act as a body representative of all students, to manage student facilities, to produce a student newspaper.
Publicists - Refer to the Annual Report or the annual Orientation Handbook.
Notes: The current form of the Union dates from 1948. A number of committees of the Union have been involved in political issues, eg Education Standing Committee, Social Action Committee. The University of Queensland Union was first mooted in 1911. It was not until 1921 however that competing student representative bodies coalesced to form the union. Except for brief periods, most notably the 1940s, late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the union has largely avoided broad political issues. Instead the union has mainly functioned as an administrative body initiating extra-curricular student activities such as sporting activities.
