Queensland Anti-Apartheid Movement (1971). Also known as the Anti-Apartheid Steering Committee.
Objectives - To organize opposition to South African sporting tours in Australia. To oppose racism and inhumanity in Australia and South Africa.
Publicists - Barry Cotterill, Dave Franken, George Georges, Ken Howard, Gerry Jones, John Maguire, Terry Millar.
Notes: The Anti-Apartheid Movement began as an independent organisation involving a number of groups and individuals, including the Communist Party, the Alliance of Revolutionary Communists, the Socialist Union, the Australian Labor Party, unions, churches and university staff and students. It became A.L.P. dominated, supported by the Trades and Labour Council and was then called the Anti-Apartheid Steering Committee. Independent activity against the South African Football tour and the Queensland Government's State of Emergency developed from the University of Queensland especially after the commencement of a strike (22nd July).
