History

Robert Barry Furlong worked as Manager of the Lamussong plantation for Burns, Philp and Co. in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea from 1937 until his death in 1944. Burns Philp were an Australian shipping line and merchant operating in the South Pacific. Furlong married Agnes Marion Courtney (aka Kit) and lived on Lamussong plantation. They had a daughter Hilary in 1941, and Kit and Hilary were evacuated to Australia in 1941. Robert 'Bob' Furlong was killed on 17 March 1944 at Kavieng Wharf during World War Two.
