Administrative history

The Theatre Royal Brisbane, at 80 Elizabeth Street was the site of the first official theatre in Brisbane, Mason's Concert Hall, which opened 25 January 1865. The building was designed by Willilam Coote and built by John Bourne. Between 1865 and 1880 it was regularly refurbished and renamed. It was variously named: Mason's Concert Hall, Mason's Theatre, Victoria Theatre, 1865 & the Royal Victoria Theatre in 1867. Between 1874 and 1880 it was known as the Queensland Theatre before it was demolished and entirely rebuilt. It then reopened in 1881 as the Theatre Royal. The venue was commandeered by American Military Forces from 1942 to1945, after which is was taken over by Will Mahoney who refurbished it. It ceased functioning as a theatre in 1959 after it was sold, and was demolished in 1987 to make way for the Myer Centre.
