History

Donald Stuart Leslie Friend was born in Moree, NSW, in 1915. He studied art in Sydney 1933-1934 and in London 1935-1936; then spent two years (1938-1940) painting in Nigeria. He served with the AIF as a Gunner and as an official war artist during World War II in Labuan, Borneo and Morolai. After the war he studied and painted in Italy, Ceylon, and in the Islands of North Australia. He returned to live in Ceylon from 1957 to 1962. From 1967 until 1982 he lived in Sanur, Bali. The cultural experience of these various geographical regions reflects strongly in both his painting and writing.
