History

John Pascoe Fawkner came to Australia with his parents in 1803, acquired the "Launceston Advertiser" in 1829, settled at Port Phillip 1835 and published its first newspaper, "The Melbourne Advertiser" in 1838. It ran for seventeen issues before being suppressed as illegal. In 1839 he published the "Port Phillip Patriot and Melbourne Advertiser" and in 1840 the "Geelong Advertiser". He was elected to the first Legislative Council in 1851 and sat until shortly before his death in 1869.
