Biographical history

Kathleen Campbell-Brown was born on 10 June 1903 in England. The family migrated to Queensland in 1911 and settled in Spring Hill, Brisbane. Kathleen earned one of 20 scholarships to attend the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1921. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with honours in classics in 1924 and in 1949 she received her Master of Arts. Campbell-Brown lectured in French at the Univesity of Queensland for almost 30 years, from 1945 to 1973. She was active in starting the UQ Staff and Graduates Club and the Staff House had the Kathleen Room named in her honour. She was friends with Karl and Gertrude Langer. A grotesque by Rhyl Hinwood of Kathleen Campbell-Brown is in the Great Court of UQ. Kathleen Campbell-Brown died on 18 April 1996 in Stafford, Brisbane. A bequest from Leslie Campbell-Brown, her sister, established the Kathleen Campbell-Brown French studies scholarship (University of Queensland) in 2011.
