Biographical history

Donald Robert (Don) Watson was born in Brisbane on 3 June 1945. In 1963 he won the Open Scholarship to undertake the University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Architecture degree. While studying part-time he working with Lund Hutton Black and Paulsen (1963 to 1964) and was employed by James Birrell and Partners (1967 to 1969). After graduating Watson working for Watson worked for Hayes and Scott (Brisbane), 1970; AB Waters and Associates (London), 1971; Geoffrey Pie and Associates (Brisbane), 1972 to 1974. After acquiring a house in South Brisbane in 1974, Waston developed an interest in local architectural history and began research for the book The Queensland House for the National Trust of Queensland. From 1975 to 1979 he practiced as an architectural consultant in Brisbane. From 1979 to 1989 Watson was employed in half- and full-time capacities as a lecturer in the University of Queensland's Department of Architecture.

Records, correspondence and photographs relating to the Well Made Plans exhibition of the Queensland Architectural Archive held in the Fryer Library. Comprises:
Friends of Fryer newsletter, includes article about the Queensland Architectural Archive and upcoming exhibition ‘Well Made Plans’, no. 21, 1988. -- Records relating to the Proposed Exhibition for the Queensland Architectural Archive in the Fryer Library, University of Queensland. -- Copy of the architectural drawing on front cover on ‘Well made plans’. -- Notes and costings for the exhibition. --Three b/w photographs of Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson launching the exhibition, with Don Watson, Ron Voller and other guests.-- Speech notes for a slideshow presentation on Architectural history headed ‘Fryer Talk’. -- 12 colour transparencies and photographic prints of the Exhibition layout. -- 12 b/w negatives and contact prints of the Exhibition layout. -- Letter from Cameron Chisholm & Nicol to F A Pidgeon (cc Don Watson) seeking sponsorship of QAA Exhibition. -- Finlayson brochure with drawings and measurements for the exhibition, costings, and layout of the venue.

The Queensland Architectural Archive was established to collect Queensland architectural records of individual and non-government architects and architectural firms. It was initiated with a grant in 1986, from the Design Board of the Australia Council (for the Arts). The project built on the architectural collections already held in the Fryer Library - Karl Langer and A.B. and R. M. Wilson. An exhibition held in the Civic Art Gallery and Museum at the Brisbane City Hall, called Well made plans drew from over 100 drawings from the Fryer Library's Queensland Architectural Archive. Essentially the Queensland Architectural Archive, from the earliest period has been a collaboration between the Fryer Library and the Architecture Department/School.
