Biographical history

Thomas Clive Groom (1874 to 1953) was an Australian engineer and architect. He attended Ipswich Grammar School and in 1891 passed the Junior Examination for entry into the University of Sydney. From ca 1897 he was employed as mining engineer at the Chillagoe, Mt Morgan and Cobar mines for a period of 14 years. In 1911 he was appointed chief draughtsman and designing engineer for the Sydney Harbour Trust. At the request of the Agricultural Department he was transferred on 1 July 1920 to take over the work of construction of wheat silos. In 1934 Groom was in Papua New Guinea and was involved with the construction of wharves at Rabaul and Port Moresby. In 1936 he was the supervising engineer for the construction of the Newstead Wharves in Brisbane. He was also constructional engineer for wharves in Sydney. Groom retired to Chatswood, Sydney. He died in Brisbane on 15 January 1953 while holiday with his daughter, Mary Hyancinthe Petronel White. Petronel White was the local councillor for Clayfield (representing the Citizens’ Municipal Organisation) from 1949 to 1967. Groom was survived by his wife Mary Jane (nee Brown), his daughter and five sons.
