Biographical history

Daisy Marchisotti, activist, was born Daisy Irving in 1904. After developing an interest in left-wing causes in the 1940s, Marchisotti became a member of the Communist Party of Australia in the 1950s, and left her job as a stenographer to work for the party. She was a member of the 1964 Communist Party delegation to the Soviet Union. Marchisotti also had an interest in Indigenous issues, and was a member of several groups fighting for Aboriginal rights, including the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI) for which she was editor of the newsletter. In 1982 she was arrested, aged 78, while protesting the treatment of Aboriginal people during the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.
