Administrative history
The University of Queensland Art Museum (UQAM) was established in 1976 to house the art works collected by The University of Queensland since the 1940s. It owes its development to a long history of philanthropic support. Benefactors have significantly shaped the University's Art Collection, from initial contributions like John Darnell's 1931 bequest—which the University used to establish a Fine Art Library (the John Darnell Art Collection) in 1941—to more recent support for infrastructure and acquisitions. Other milestones include the 1976 opening of the Art Museum in the Forgan Smith tower, and its relocation in 2004 to the James and Mary Emilia Mayne Centre (previously known as 'Mayne Hall'), the latter of which was made possible by a significant monetary donation from Irish-American philanthropist Charles (Chuck) Feeney and The Atlantic Philanthropies, a funding body he founded. Over the decades, both organisations and individuals have enriched the collection with works by prominent Australian artists and have supported the Museum's facililities and exhibitions. Notable gifts include the Stuartholme-Behan Collection and the establishment of the National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize.
