Biographical history

Beatrice May Hutton was born in Rockhampton in 1893, the daughter of Falconer West Hutton, an architect and partner in Hutton and Ahern, Rockhampton. She was an articled pupil of architect E.M. Hockings from 1913-16. She became an Associate of the Queensland Institute of Architects in 1916, probably the first woman member of an Australian architectural institute. She was employed as a draughtswoman by Wardell and Denning, Architects, Sydney 1916-17 and then by C.W. Chambers, Architect and Consulting Engineer, Sydney 1917-31. From 1931-33 she was in partnership with C.W. Chambers as the junior partner of Chambers and Hutton, Architects, Sydney. She returned to Rockhampton in 1934 and in later life, was a woodcarver and craft studio proprietor.
