In 1910 the Ipswich branch of the Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum was renamed the Ipswich Hospital for the Insane. It accommodated patients suffering from mental illness, and, from 1933, children with intellectual disabilities. In 1938 it was renamed the Ipswich Mental Hospital. This collection features photographs of the institution's early administrators Samuel Lewis went to Ipswich as a warder in 1879 and held a variety of positions until 1916. Dr Harold Foxton was appointed the first Medical Superintendent of Ipswich in 1910. He was replaced in 1919 by Dr Alexander Morrison, who served in the position until his death in 1926. After a short tenure by Dr J.E.F. McDonald, in 1928 Dr Basil Stafford was appointed to the job. Under his leadership a less custodial approach to treating mentally ill residents was introduced Stafford remained at Ipswich until 1937, when he became Medical Superintendent at Goodna and later Director of Mental Hygiene. In the post-war years the Ipswich facility underwent further name changes, eventually closing down in 1998 when the land and buildings were acquired by the University of Queensland for use as its Ipswich campus.
The Ipswich Hospital for the Insane began in 1878 as the Ipswich branch of the Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum. In 1910 the name Ipswich Hospital for the Insane was used. It was renamed in 1938 the Ipswich Mental Hospital and in 1964 the Ipswich Special Hospital. In 1968 it was renamed Challinor Centre. This became the site of the University of Queensland Ipswich Campus in 1997.
