Biographical history

Sir Henry Abel Smith was Governor of Queensland from 1958 to 1966. He was born in Westminister, London, on 8 March 1900. He served in World War II as as major, and then was promoted to colonel and received the Distinguished Service Order. He and his wife, Lady May Helen Emma Cambridge, came to Queensland to assume office as Queensland Governor on 18 March 1958. They proved so popular that his original term was extended by three years.
