Biographical history
William Neil Gillies was born in New South Wales on 27 October 1868. Late in 1910, he selected land on the Atherton Tableland and worked in the timber, sugar and dairying industries. He was the MLA for Eacham 27 April 1912 - 24 October 1925 as a member of the Labor Party. During this time he was Minister for Agriculture and Stock. His farming legislation helped win over the rural vote for the Ryan Labor Government. He was a member of the Australian Workers' Union and was opposed to non-European labour. He established the Main Road Board while a government minister in 1919. He was briefly Premier of Queensland in 1925, but retired to become a commissioner on the Board of Trade.
