Biographical history

William Gordon Higgs was born in Wales in 1886. He joined the merchant navy as a 16 year old and seems to have risen fairly swiftly through the ranks to become Master with the Port Line. He was awarded an OBE in 1942 and was commended for brave conduct in August 1943 (following the sinking of the Port Victor). He died in 1956.
