Biographical history
Mrs Jane McKean was a widow whose husband F. S. McKean was a missionary who was reported accidentally killed by the French in Tahiti on 30 June 1844. Their only daughter Mary, born 3 Feb 1844 died as a child. Their only son Frank left Elgin in 1862 for Queensland. For some three years he was employed on sheep and cattle properties in the Burdekin district where he endured considerable hardship. In 1866 he moved to Brisbane where he secured employment with John Fenwick and Co. In 1867 Fenwicks opened a branch at Ipswich and McKean transferred to that town.

Forty letters from Jane McKean, at Elgin, Scotland, to her son Frank Gordon McKean from 9 Sep 1862 to 1 Mar 1867. Some of the letters have over 7000 words. Many are cross written letters. Some have been stitched together with fine yarn.
Includes handwritten biographical notes and summary of contents on 28 pages by John Sutherland, made for Fryer Library in 1974.
