History

The Open Brethren established the Doomadgee Mission on the Nicholson River in Far North Queensland's Gulf Country region in 1936. This new site replaced the Old Doomadgee Mission at Bayley Point on Ganggalidda land, which had opened in 1933 but was damaged by a cyclone in 1936, prompting the need for relocation. The closure date of the dormitories is unclear, though records indicate at least one was still operational in 1968. In 1983, the community was gazetted as a Deed of Grant in Trust under the Community Services Act.
