History

The Criterion Theatre was located on the corner of Park & Pitt Streets in Sydney. It was designed by architect George R Johnson for entrepreneur John Solomon. It opened on 27 December 1886, but was remodelled in 1892 when the Brough-Boucicault Company took over the lease. J.C. Williamson took over the lease in 1915 and produced many West End comedies. The theatre was closed in 1935 and demolished in 1936.
