History

Graduate of the University of Queensland (Bachelor of Commerce, 1936) who was appointed as Deputy Registrar of the University of Queensland in 1954 and Registrar from 1957 until his retirement in 1969. He was instrumental in completing the transfer of UQ from its original city location on George Street to St Lucia. In 1965, he was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and upon his retirement in 1969, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in acknowledgement of his contributions to UQ. In his youth, Connell was a rugby league half-back, representing Queensland on several occasions. He later devoted over 20 years to serving as a rugby administrator, including as President of the Queensland Rugby League (1953-1959).
