History
In 1985 the Australian Government announced its intention to introduce a national identification scheme which would require every citizen to hold an identification card, known as the Australia Card. Early polls suggested support for the scheme, but by late 1986 strong community opposition had emerged, culminating in the enabling bill being defeated by the Democrats and Coalition parties in December of that year. Professor Geoffrey Walker, of the UQ Law School, was a prominent opponent of the scheme.
