History

"Bowden began work as a telephonist in Gympie exchange in Queensland in 1937 at the age of 16. She became active in the Queensland branch of the union after moving to Brisbane in 1942 or 1943. Following her marriage in 1952 she was compulsorily retired. She returned to telephony in 1969 and over the course of the 1970s and early 1980s became a leading figure in the Queensland ATPOA’s resurgence, both as a rank and file activist and as Branch President. She was awarded life membership of the ATPOA upon retirement in 1983." — excerpted from Rickertt, 2006
