Gallwey, Wilfred Denver, 1898-1967

Wilfred Denver Gallwey was born at Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted to World War I in 1916 at the age of 18. He was given the service number of 2430 and was initially assigned to the 52nd Battalion as part of the 5th reinforcements. He embarked from Brisbane on 19 September 1916 aboard HMAT Seang Choon. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 9 December 1916 and was promoted to Acting Corporal (without pay) on 11 December. He was transferred to the 47th battalion on the 7 March 1917. It was as part of this unit that, on 11 April, he took part in the battle of Bullecourt. During June 1917, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. In July 1917, Gallwey became severely ill with trench fever and was transferred to Weymouth hospital in England and did not return to the front line. After his recovery, Gallwey spent the rest of the war as a signalling instructor in England. He departed England on 9 March 1919 aboard HT Kashmir and arrived in Australia on the 24 April 1919. After the war Gallwey resumed his job as a bank clerk and lived in Australia and Fiji. Gallwey spent the time leading up to the Second World War in London as liaison between the British Ambassador in Berlin and the War Office in London. After spending the war in London, he returned to Australia in 1946. Wilfred Denver Gallwey died on 27 May 1967

Thomas Welsby (1858-1941) was a businessman and politician based in Queensland, Australia. He was a member of the Queensland legislative Assembly from 1911 to 1915. Welsby was born on 29 November 1858 in Ipswich, Queensland. He worked for the Bank of New South Wales in Brisbane from October 1874 to May 1879 when he joined the Australian Joint Stock Bank in Brisbane. In July 1884 he left to practice as a public accountant, trustee and auditor. He became a member of the Brisbane Stock Exchange, operated a shipping partnership and audited the Brisbane Municipal Council accounts until 1893. As a member and chairman of the Booroodabin Divisional Board (Queensland) in 1893 to 1902 Welsby was chairman of the New Farm State School committee from 1899 to 1905 and honorary treasurer of the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce in 1899 to 1908. Welsby unsuccessfully stood for the Queensland Legislative Assembly as a candidate for Fortitude Valley in 1899, 1902 and 1909; as a Ministerialist he won North Brisbane in 1911 and held Merthyr from 1912 to 1915. Welsby loved history and sport and was the foundation honorary treasurer, president and vice-president of the Historical Society of Queensland between 1913 and 1941. He was the foundation secretary of the Brisbane Gymnasium in 1882, a founding member of the Royal Queensland Yacht Club in 1885, formed the Queensland Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Union in 1909 was the president of the Queensland Rugby Union from 1929-1939. Welsby died on 3 February 1941 at New Farm, Brisbane.
