Hanger, Eunice

Eunice Hanger joined the staff of the University of Queensland in 1955, and was a lecturer in the Department of English until her death in 1972. She edited several anthologies of Australian plays, and wrote numerous articles on Australian drama. She also acted in, produced and wrote many plays. She was active in the Twelfth Night Theatre. She also assembled a collection of unpublished Australian playscripts, now known as the Hanger Collection of Australian Playscripts.

Watson, Ross

Ross Watson was an Aboriginal Australian activist, coordinator of the Black Protest Committee and founder and editor of Black Nation, a newspaper that ran from 1982 to 1985. Ross, with his newspaper, played a major role in organising rallies, protests and demonstrations, particularly around the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. Ross died in 2013. He was also a founder of the Murri School and Murri radio station 98.9 FM.

Weatherall, Bob

Robert (Bob) Weatherall (Kamilaroi and Ngemba) is an Indigenous activist born and raised on the Balonne River in St George, Queensland. He worked in shearing sheds before moving to Toowoomba where he studied performing and visual arts at the Darling Downs Institute. He worked briefly as an actor at the Black Theatre in Redfern and a musician, eventually forming his own country folk band, Old Dog Soup. Bob spent most his adult life in Brisbane and Toowoomba. He was the CEO of Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) from 1980 to 1994, and played a major role in establishing the Tent City in Musgrave Park and other demonstrations around the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. In 2023 he received the Red Ochre Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement.

Perkins, Elizabeth, 1933-2004

Elizabeth Perkins (1933-2004) was born in Brisbane on 8 April 1933. She completed her Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and PhD with University of Queensland. In 1970 she took up a lecturer's position at James Cook University and remained there until her retirement in 1996. Elizabeth was involved with several North Queensland Theatre groups including the Townsville Little Theatre, the Tropic Line Theatre, and she was a member of the New Moon Theatre board. Elizabeth supported the drama, art, music and literature of North Queensland and was regarded as a significant contributor to the Townsville cultural scene. She became the founding member of many arts bodies. In 2002 she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to the Arts.

Laurence John Hartley Teakle was Professor of Agriculture from 1947 until 1963 at the University of Queensland. From 1946 to 1947 he was the Western Australian Commissioner for Soil Conservation. In 1964 he was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University and in 1969 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws.
