Stanley, Francis Drummond Greville, 1839-1897

Francis Stanley was born on 1 January 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied and practiced architecture in Edinburgh. He emigrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane in 1862. Stanley was Colonial Architect for the Queensland Government from 1873 to 1881. During his employment he continued to private commissions. Among his designs are: Brisbane General Post Office, Roma Street Railway Station, Supreme Court of Queensland, the Queensland Club, Tighnabruaich at Indooroopilly, and St Ann's Industrial School (now part of All Hallow's School). He died on @8 May 1897.

Gill, George Brockwell, 1858-1954

George Brockwell Gill was born in London and completed his architectural training in England before emigrating to Australia in 1886 and settling in Ipswich. He began working with the architect Samuel Shenton, and took over his practice when Shenton retired in 1889. Gill was elected an Associate of the Queensland Institute of Architects in 1904 and a Fellow by 1913. He was the Institute's vice-president in 1914-16 and president in 1918-19. His works in Ipswich include: the Cribb and Foote department store (1911), the City View Hotel (1908), and the Solders' Memorial Hall (1922). Gill retired in 1943 and he arranged for AH Conrad and TBF Gargett to take over his office. Gill died on 1 June 1954.

Greenham, John Ernest, 1871-1917

John Ernest Greenham was born on 20 September 1871 at Ipswich, Queensland. Ernest Greenham, as he was more well known, attended Ipswich Grammar School and worked in the Royal Bank of Queensland. He went on a 10 month trip overseas when he was 24. He married Harriet (Annie) Parker on 21 January 1902. They had three children: Clare Hollis Shepherd (nee Greenham), Charles Gordon Greenham, and Arnold John Greenham. He died on 5 September 1917.

Matthews, Brian (Brian Ernest)

Brian Ernest Matthews was born on 27 December 1936 at St Kilda, Melbourne. From 1967 until the early 1990s he worked at Flinders University teaching English and Australian literature, with the focus changing to Australian literature over time. Matthews wrote short stories, books, essays, articles, reviews, and biographies. Considered one of Australia's foremost scholars of Henry Lawson and Lawson's mother Louisa, Matthews works include Louisa, The Receding Wave : Henry Lawson's Prose, the Lawson entry in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Quickening, Magpie, A Fine and Private Place, The Temple Down the Road, Manning Clark: A Biography and Richie Benaud. Matthews helped to establish the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL). He wrote a column for the Australian Weekend Magazine from 1997 to 2001 and also wrote a column for Eureka Street*. He died on 2 June 2022.

Moses, John A. (John Anthony), 1930-

Historian John Anthony Moses was born in Atherton, Queensland, on 10 June 1930. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree (1960) and Master of Arts degree (1963) at the University of Queensland before moving to Germany where he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (1965) at the University of Erlangen. After returning to Australia he was appointed as a Tutor in the Department of History at the University of Queensland, where he remained for three decades. He held numerous positions, including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader. He served as Head of the Department of History from 1986 to 1989. He retired in 1995, though was an Honorary Research Consultant in the Department of History until 1997. He published works on German and trade union history and was editor of The Australian Journal of Politics and History.
